While watching the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Turin I filed my federal and state tax returns. I knew I was getting a refund from the federal return, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that I will receive a refund from the state return as well. I thought I was going to owe taxes to the state of California this year, but the online calculator told me otherwise. I will net a little more than $700, even after subtracting the $19.95 it cost me to file my federal return through TurboTax. (Why can’t the IRS have free online tax filing like the state of California?) That money, along with my annual bonus from work, will go directly into my savings account in preparation for the deposit Dan and I will make when we book our wedding venue. That way it’s going towards a wonderful cause.
